Temporary Traffic Patterns in Effect to Create Safe Work Zone for Contractors
(September 3, 2021) – As part of its multi-year
Reisterstown Road Electric Reliability Upgrade program,
Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) is starting a preventative maintenance project on underground transmission cables along a segment of MD 140 (Reisterstown Road). Beginning 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, BGE contractor crews will work on a segment of northbound MD 140 in Pikesville on a 24-hour daily schedule for approximately 90 days, through early December.
To ensure safety and assist BGE contractor crews, Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has permitted BGE to shift the two northbound lanes of MD 140 and alter traffic patterns within the BGE work zone, which is between Village Road and the ramp to I-695 (Baltimore Beltway).
There will be two lanes open in each direction of MD 140 and businesses will remain open during the BGE project, with the following temporary alterations:
- Northbound MD 140 traffic will be shifted to the left and lanes will be narrowed.
- Construction will require temporary closing of three business access points directly on MD 140: the northern Carroll Fuel access, the Ramada by Wyndham Pikesville/Baltimore North right in/right out access, and the Target right in/right out access.
- Hotel and gas station customers may use the driveway to Target and AMF Pikesville lanes to reach their destinations.
- Access to Target will remain via the current signalized intersection, which will not be impacted by the work. The right in/right out movement at Target’s main parking lot will be closed.
- Access to the AMF Pikesville Lanes will not be affected.
- The MDOT MTA bus stop on northbound MD 140 in front of the Ramada Inn will be closed and a pedestrian detour will be put in place as a result of the sidewalk closure.
MDOT SHA advises travelers to plan for extra travel time along MD 140 in the BGE work zone.
BGE customers with questions or concerns about this project may contact BGE’s project outreach team at 410-618-0107, or by email at
BGEProject@bge.com. When contacting BGE about this project, please refer to the “Reisterstown Road Electric Reliability Upgrade Site 4” and a member of the BGE team will respond.
MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists can dial #77 or 911 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.

Editor’s Note
From intersection improvements to widening and new interchange construction, MDOT SHA is investing in projects to enhance the commute and daily travel for millions of Marylanders. MDOT SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and 17,000 miles of non-toll state roads – the interstate, US and state numbered routes in Maryland’s 23 counties.
