(June 24, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has completed a $12 million intersection improvement project at the MD 355 (Frederick Road) at West Old Baltimore Road intersection in Clarksburg, Montgomery County. Part of Governor Larry Hogan’s investment in highways and bridges, the one-half-mile project improves traffic operations and safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.   

“This project at MD 355 and West Old Baltimore Road is an excellent example of MDOT’s mission to improve safety and expand travel options for all users,” said MDOT Secretary Greg Slater. “MDOT SHA worked closely with our partners in Montgomery County to deliver improvements that benefit everyone who drives, bikes and walks through this area.”

The project included realignment of the intersection to improve sight distance, widening of MD 355 to provide a northbound left-turn lane onto West Old Baltimore Road, and widening of West Old Baltimore Road to create a left-turn lane onto MD 355.

Other work included:

• Installation of a new traffic signal.
• Adding acceleration and deceleration lanes along southbound MD 355 onto West Old Baltimore Road.
• Creating a new shared-use hiker/biker path along southbound MD 355 and new sidewalks along northbound MD 355.
• Resurfacing, pavement markings and signage.
• Relocating a 24-inch water main.
• Replacement of a drainage culvert.

“The new intersection alignment, wider lanes and shared-use path will benefit thousands of motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians who use this stretch of Frederick Road,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “This project is another example of how MDOT SHA is delivering infrastructure improvements for our customers every day.”
