(May 19, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin enhancing the driving surface of the MD 56 (Big Pool Road) bridge over I-70 (Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway) in Washington County starting on Friday, May 21. Crews will work 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Tuesday and Wednesday to resurface and stripe the roadway.
MDOT SHA contractor, Concrete General, Inc of Gaithersburg, will perform the work and use portable message signs, barrels and barricades to alert motorists about the work zone. During work hours, MD 56 will be closed in both directions at I-70 and the following detour will be in place:
- MD 56 northbound traffic will go to I-70 eastbound to MD 68 to I-70 westbound.
- MD 56 southbound traffic will go to I-70 westbound to Exit 5, MD 615 (Millstone Road) to I-70 eastbound.
The resurfacing is part of MDOT SHA’s efforts to rehabilitate the MD 56 bridge over I-70. Learn more about the project HERE.
MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
