​(May 13, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will shift travel lanes along the I-695 South/Outer Loop Saturday night in the Catonsville area of Baltimore County. Starting at 9 p.m., crews will begin adjusting the location of three travel lanes on I-695 between US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) and MD 144 (Frederick Road).  The work requiring lane closures is expected to be complete by 9 a.m. Sunday.    

MDOT SHA contractor Tutor Perini Corporation of New Rochelle, NY, is performing the work, which includes removing concrete traffic barriers and installing pavement markings. Motorists are advised to avoid the area while work is taking place. Crews will close lanes on I-695 based on the following schedule:   

• 9 p.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. Sunday – single lane closure.
• 11 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday – double lane closure.   
• Between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday  – Maryland State Police will conduct a 15-20 minute traffic stop with a triple lane closure.
• Interchange ramps will be open with short merge areas.   

Once the overnight work is complete 9 a.m. Sunday, all three lanes on the Outer Loop will be open to traffic in their final configuration. The recently constructed fourth lane will temporarily be closed Saturday night and Sunday while crews work behind barriers on the right side of the roadway.

The fourth lane, which is an an acceleration/deceleration lane to the interchange ramps, will partially re-open at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday and will remain partially open for about two weeks. The far right lane, which will become the fifth lane, remains under construction.    

This weekend’s traffic shift is part of MDOT SHA’s $68-million project to widen southbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Outer Loop). Learn more about the project HERE.   

Drivers are advised to drive with caution through the work zone and use turn signals in advance of exiting and entering the Outer Loop, as access to interchange ramps will be temporarily marked with portable signs and reflective barrels.    

In case of inclement weather, the temporary lane closures and traffic shift will be rescheduled to the next possible night.
