(December 22, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has completed sidewalk and stormwater facility improvements on US 13 Business (South Salisbury Boulevard) in Salisbury. The $8.6 million project provides critical stormwater management upgrades as well as safer vehicle and pedestrian access in this busy stretch of US 13 Business between South Boulevard and Calvert Street.
“The completion of US 13 Business route is important to the Eastern Shore and will benefit residents, travelers and businesses along this corridor,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Our administration knows how much this means to the Salisbury community, and I appreciate the dedicated crews who worked safely and efficiently through the COVID-19 emergency to deliver this critical project.”
Work performed by contractor George & Lynch of Dover, Del., included new curb, gutters, sidewalks and resurfacing, and new stormwater pipes and inlets. The project completes MDOT SHA’s multi-phase modernization of US 13 Business from Salisbury University to Peninsula Regional Medical Center just south of US 50 Business.
“These improvements make Salisbury more walkable and improve critical links for residents, businesses and the medical center,” MDOT Secretary Greg Slater said. “The cooperation and feedback we received from city and business leaders, residents, Salisbury University and Peninsula Regional Medical Center helped us complete a project that provides a safe, attractive and more accessible roadway for the entire community.”
MDOT SHA worked closely with the City of Salisbury and Peninsula Regional Medical Center to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians by reducing the number of access points along US 13 Business, particularly in the busy two-block area between Newton Street and South Division Street, an area known as the “S” curve.
“These improvements complement Salisbury’s downtown revitalization efforts and will benefit thousands of area residents, business owners and visitors for many years,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “This project involved coordination with many stakeholders, including the university and the hospital. They’ve been tremendous partners and we’re grateful for their support.”
The US 13 Business project is an example of the critical work performed by MDOT SHA during Maryland’s COVID-19 State of Emergency while focusing on the health and safety of crews and the public.
