(November 17, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin improving pedestrian safety along MD 34 (Shepherdstown Pike/W. Main Street) in Sharpsburg tomorrow.

Starting at 7:30 a.m., crews will begin working in the area between Sharpsburg Elementary School and the area just east of MD 65 (Sharpsburg Pike), adding a high visibility crosswalk at the school and resurfacing the roadway. Work should be complete by 5 p.m.

MDOT SHA contractor C. William Hetzer, Inc of Hagerstown, will be doing the work which also includes restriping the roadway and replacing the crosswalk at MD 34 and Mechanic Street. A flagging operation will be used along MD 34 for most of the operation, but a detour will be in place when crews are working on the crosswalks at Mechanic Street.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes.  Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
