(October 30, 2020) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has recently completed the widening of a nearly one-mile section of MD 32 (Sykesville Road) between Main Street and MacBeth Way in Carroll County. 

“This important project will enhance safety and ease daily congestion to the MD 32 corridor. Part of the scope includes providing an entrance to the Maryland National Guard’s new Freedom Readiness Center which, upon completion, will be the largest of its kind in Maryland,” said  MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith.  “I want to thank our partner on this project, the Maryland Department of General Services, who contributed to construction of the new entrance.”

The widening is part of a $5.8 million project that will enhance safety and reduce congestion for travelers,  businesses and the National Guard Freedom Readiness Center currently under construction. 

The enhancements include a second travel lane on northbound MD 32,  a new two-way left turn lane through the project limits and at the entrance into the Maryland National Guard’s new Freedom Readiness Center. As part of the work, crews also extended a large structural culvert to a Piney Branch tributary.  Final landscaping work is being completed. 

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
