(May 8, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close and detour the MD 28 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Monocacy River in Frederick County every weekend through the end of September, excluding holiday weekends. The closures start Fridays at 10 p.m. and end Mondays by 5 a.m.
Remaining work includes cleaning the bridge, removing old paint, prepping the area, painting the bridge and repairing portions of the upper steel.
Some of the equipment must be positioned on the roadway because the bridge is narrow. A total bridge closure is necessary, which can only be done on weekends due to safety concerns and the large size of the equipment being used.
In addition to the weekend closures, there will be single lane closures and flagging operations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until the repairs are complete.
MDOT SHA will detour vehicles using MD 109 (Old Hundred Road), MD 355 (Urbana Pike), MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) and MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike). Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time if traveling during the closure.
MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes.
