Motorists Can Expect Daytime Single Lane Closures

(June 22, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is starting a project to reconstruct 3.3 miles of MD 495 (Swanton Road) between MD 135 (Maryland Highway) and the Crabtree Creek Bridge in Swanton. The project will begin after the July 4th holiday and should be complete late-fall.

The $3.1 million project includes replacing several deteriorating drainage culverts under MD 495. The reconstruction project also includes:

• Patching the concrete road base;
• Milling, paving and restriping MD 495; and
• Upgrading guardrail.

MDOT SHA will use a newer technology called “Cold In-Place” recycling on this project. This is a process of milling existing pavement and reformulating the material on-site and adding it back as a layer of asphalt. This process does not require heat to mix the material, which is combined with other aggregate (rocks) and compacted to obtain the right strength to bear traffic loads. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Keystone Lime Company Inc. of Springs, Pa., are permitted to close a single lane Mondays through Fridays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. A flagging operation will guide the 1,700 vehicles that use this section of MD 495 through the work zone.

This section of Swanton Road was last resurfaced in 1999.
