Motorists Can Expect Weekday Single Lane Closures

(May 18, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin work to improve safety and ease daily congestion on US 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) between Hansonville Road (north)/Hessong Bridge Road and Hansonville Road (south)/Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick County. The $4.2 million project will be complete summer 2019.

The project will restrict vehicles from crossing over US 15 at the Devilbiss Bridge Road/Bartgis Road intersection. Traffic will turn right and proceed to the next intersection and make a U-turn. The J-turns will significantly reduce angle crashes on US 15 in this area.

The project includes:

• Slightly widening the US 15/Hansonville Road/Hessong Bridge Road intersections and the US 15/Devilbiss Bridge Road/Bartgis Road and US 15/Old Frederick Road intersections to add acceleration and deceleration lanes;

• Installing a concrete median at the Devilbiss Bridge Road/Bartgis Road intersection to prevent crossovers;

• Constructing a channelized median acceleration lane for traffic from westbound Old Frederick Road making a left-turn onto southbound US 15;

• Closing the west leg of Old Frederick Road at US 15;

• Patching, paving, and striping US 15 between Hansonville Road (north)/Hessong Bridge Road and Hansonville Road (south)/Resthaven Memorial Gardens, a distance of 1.7 miles;

• Upgrading highway lighting systems; and

• Installing new stormwater management systems.

Motorists should expect single lane closures in each direction of US 15 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday morning as crews set concrete barrier. Most of the work will take place behind concrete barrier after it is installed, but there may be occasional lane single lane closures for material and equipment deliveries.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, C. William Hetzer, Inc. of Hagerstown, will use message boards, barrels and cones to guide motorists through the work zone during lane closures. Approximately 45,000 vehicles travel on US 15 in this area each day.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
