Motorists Can Expect Off-Peak Overnight Lane Closures

(May 16, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a safety and resurfacing project on I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Greenspring Avenue and MD 25 (Falls Road) in Pikesville/Lutherville, Baltimore County. The $3.5 million project will be complete mid-fall.

Last completely resurfaced in 1998, the project includes pavement patching, milling (removal of the top layer of asphalt), paving and restriping 1.5-miles of I-695 and interchange ramps. Other work includes repairing the concrete median barrier, upgrading highway lighting to efficient LED systems, upgrading guardrail and replacing road signs.

Motorists can expect nighttime single and double lane closures Sunday nights through Friday mornings between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Allan Myers MD., Inc. will use barrels and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. Nearly 187,000 motorists use this use this section of the Beltway each day. Although the traffic volumes diminish significantly overnight, motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time during construction.

By June 30, the end of the State’s 2018 fiscal year, MDOT SHA will have resurfaced or treated half of all state highway lane miles since 2015. This milestone marks the improvement of nearly 8,500 lane miles, calculated by miles of highway multiplied by the number of lanes, improving safety and enhancing the customer experience for millions of drivers across the state.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
