(May 4, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will improve safety and ride quality on US 1 (Belair Road) between I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) and Dunfield Road in Fullerton. The 1.5-mile project will be complete late-summer.

The $4.5 million project includes patching, paving and restriping both directions of US 1, as well as repairing and upgrading concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk and driveway aprons to meet ADA standards.  DOT SHA will also add concrete bus pads to preserve the life of the pavement at bus stops.

Other work on the project includes:

• Installing new concrete sidewalk on southbound US 1 between Stillmeadow Road and MD 43 (Whitemarsh Boulevard) to enhance pedestrian safety;

• Repairing roadside slopes and improving drainage systems on northbound US 1 at the White Marsh Run stream crossing; and

• Upgrading guardrail.

Motorists can expect daily single-lane closures in each direction of US 1 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings and Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will also be occasional overnight ramp closures and detours at the US 1 / I-695 interchange.

On May 9, crews will close the ramp from southbound US 1 to the outer loop of I-695 (westbound) between 9 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday. Motorists will be diverted to the inner loop of I-695 (eastbound) and through the “cloverleaf” interchange ramps and back to outer loop I-695.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Allan Myers - MD, Inc., of Fallston, will use barrels, cones and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. On average, 46,560 vehicles travel along this section of Belair Road each day, so motorists should provide extra travel time.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation and utility partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
