(Hanover, MD) – At its 25th annual training conference last night in Baltimore, the Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) Consortium leadership last night recognized the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) for delivering outstanding transportation projects. The MdQI Consortium, which includes private sector industry associations and public-sector transportation agencies, gave 14 of 21 MdQI Awards of Excellence to MDOT transportation professionals for planning studies, programs and construction projects completed in 2017.  Additionally, two private sector firms received awards for their work on MDOT projects.

“These awards show MDOT professionals and our private sector partners are working hard for all Marylanders to deliver the best transportation network in the world,” said MDOT Secretary Pete K. Rahn.

MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) received two awards for its project to provide a connector between Concourses C and D and a new security checkpoint at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.  MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) received two awards for its project to replace the deck (riding surface) on the MD 546 Bridge over I-68 in Garrett County.

“The Maryland Quality Initiative, for 25 years, has served as the forum to bring state and private industry together with a shared vision of improving the quality of Maryland’s transportation system," said Dan Cheng, Co-Chair of the MdQI Steering Committee. “The Awards of Excellence recognizes the quality, collaboration and innovation of our transportation partners each year.”

MDOT is comprised of five business units and one Authority:  The Secretary’s Office, MDOT SHA, MDOT Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA), MDOT MAA and the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). This unique set-up provides MDOT leaders the ability to develop a coordinated and balanced approach to transportation.

MdQI is dedicated to continuous quality improvement in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Maryland’s transportation system. MdQI was founded by state and private sector representatives in 1993. The group has expanded its mission and activities to include MDOT transportation business units, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), local government transportation agencies, and industry associations.
