Coastal Storm to be Bring First Accumulating Snow to Lower Shore and Central Maryland

 
(December 8, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is preparing for the first snowfall of the season in central, eastern and northern Maryland. Crews are pre-treating most roads with salt brine throughout the State.

 
“Pavement temperatures are still relatively warm which should help reduce major impacts to the state highways,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Gregory Slater. “This is an excellent opportunity for crews to dust off our equipment for the winter season that lies ahead.”

 
Snow is predicted to push into the lower Eastern Shore by Friday afternoon and will begin as rain, prohibiting advanced pre-treatment. Central Maryland will begin seeing snow Friday evening and continuing overnight into Saturday morning before tapering off. MDOT SHA crews will deploy and use salt and salt brine as the primary material to treat roads.

 
MDOT SHA emergency operators and maintenance staff will closely monitor roads and patrol for any icy patches as temperatures drop Saturday night into Sunday. Using cutting-edge technology, such as infrared pavement sensors, crews can target areas needing retreatment and management can determine appropriate deployment of people and resources.
