Temporary Roundabout at Harford Road/Glen Arm Road/Mt. Vista Road Intersection Opens November 8; Lane Shift on New I-695 Inner Loop Bridges in Arbutus in Effect November 10

(November 3, 2017) – On Wednesday, November 8, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will shift traffic patterns on two major construction projects in Baltimore County.

On November 8, in Glen Arm, MDOT SHA will open a temporary roundabout at the Harford Road (MD 147) intersection with Glen Arm Road/Mt. Vista roads as part of the $3.7 million project to construct a new roundabout. Simultaneously, crews will re-open access from Harford Road to Glen Arm Road. Mt. Vista Road will be temporarily closed at Harford Road and will re-open in late-fall.

Drivers should plan for extra travel time on Harford Road and the Mt. Vista Road detour route during the next two months.  Crews will use barrels and signs to guide travelers through the temporary roundabout.  The detour for Mt. Vista Road is Harford Road to Sunshine Avenue to Belair Road to Mt. Vista Road.    

In Arbutus, MDOT SHA will shift traffic lanes on the inner loop of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) onto two new​ bridges over Benson Avenue, AMTRAK/MARC, US1 and Leeds Avenue.  On the evening of November 9, crews will move traffic from the right side of I-695 to the left side, moving all traffic onto the new bridge. On Thursday night, November 9, crews will perform a traffic lane shift on the two new bridges, and the inner loop of I-695 will be placed into the final and permanent lane configuration on the new bridges as of November 10.

There will be no increase in the number of through travel lanes; however, the temporary 11-foot lane width in effect during construction will be re-set to the original 12-foot lane width.  This is part of MDOT SHA’s $44.6 million project to replace the two bridges, relocate an I-695 inner loop interchange ramp from Leeds Avenue to US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) and reconstruct US 1 in Arbutus.  The bridge construction work will be complete late-fall.
