Motorists Should Slow Down and Stay Alert

(October 12, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a $5.8 million reconstruction project on MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) between MD 383 (Broad Run Road) and Old Holter Road in Jefferson. The project will improve safety for drivers and pedestrians throughout the corridor. The project is expected to be complete summer 2019.

“Urban reconstruction projects improve communities, mobility and safety,” said District Engineer, John Concannon.  “MDOT SHA has been working with area businesses and the town to minimize impacts during construction and we encourage everyone to continue to patronize these merchants.”

MDOT SHA’s contractor, L.W. Wolfe Enterprises, Inc. of Myersville, was awarded the contract that includes upgrading sidewalks to ADA-compliancy; replacing curb and gutter; upgrading traffic signals, signs and pavement markings; and resurfacing and landscaping the corridor.

The project will be completed in phases to maintain access during construction. Crews will guide motorists through the work zone using cones, barrels, signs and an occasionally a flagging operation. Motorists should expect to see crews working Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. More than 5,000 motorists use this portion of MD 180 (Jefferson Pike), each day.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures. To access an interactive map of all major MDOT SHA projects, click on e-Road Ready 2017.
