Bridge Painting Requires Ramp Closure and Detour

(September 12, 2016) – Tonight, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a project to paint a steel beam on the MD 5 (Branch Avenue) Bridge over Coventry Way in Clinton.  The project will be completed mid-fall, weather permitting.

Beginning at 10 p.m. SHA crews will close the southbound MD 5 ramp to eastbound Coventry Way to stage equipment to perform the metal beam painting.  SHA will work Sundays through Thursdays from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.  The ramp will reopen each morning by 6 a.m.

SHA’s contractor, PDI Sheetz Inc. of Linthicum will use arrow boards, cones and barrels to direct motorists to a detour.  The $155,000 project will prolong the life of the 17-year-old bridge by protecting the metal from natural corrosion associated with weather.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
