Warning Lights to Flash during Left Turns at Braeburn Parkway Intersection; Restricted Turn Movements to Increase Safety
(August 30, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently began safety modifications to the MD 190 (River Road) and Braeburn Parkway intersection in Montgomery County. SHA engineers analyzed the intersection this spring for possible safety enhancements, which include:
- Installing traffic-activated overhead flashing signs in both directions of River Road when vehicles turn left onto Braeburn Parkway
- Restricting Braeburn Parkway traffic in both directions to a right-only turn onto River Road
- Separating left-turning traffic from through traffic at the intersection
SHA engineers are also evaluating possible safety improvements at nearby intersections on River Road at Pyle Road and Whitter Boulevard.
SHA’s contractor for the $300,000 project is Bruce and Merrilees Electric Company. Crews may close one lane during off-peak hours during construction, which is expected to be complete by mid-fall, weather permitting.
While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
