Motorists Should Expect Single Daytime Lane Closures

(July 19, 2016) – Next week the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing 3.5 miles of US 40 Alt. (National Pike) between US 219 (Chestnut Ridge Road) and Green Lantern Road.  Weather permitting, the $2 million project will be complete spring 2017.

Drivers should expect single lane closures with a flagging operation Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.  SHA’s contractor, Keystone Lime Co. Inc. of Springs, PA will patch, grind (remove the top layer of pavement), resurface, restripe the pavement and install new guardrail. Additionally, significant drainage improvements will be made to the corridor. 

Approximately 2,000 vehicles use this section of US 40 Alt. each day and motorists should plan extra travel time during the project work.  In addition to a flagging operation, SHA will use barrels, dynamic message signs and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
