Off-Peak Lane Closures Expected through fall
(July 14, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is improving roadways and ramps in Montgomery and Prince George’s as part of the $12.6 million safety and resurfacing project on I-95 between the I-95/I-495 split to MD 212
(Old Gunpowder Road). The interchanges at I-95/I-495 and I-95/MD 212 are also included within the four-mile project limits. Weather and progress permitting, the project should be complete late fall 2016.
Beginning tonight, crews will temporarily close lanes on I-95 to install guardrail, patch the roadway, remove the top layer of asphalt, apply new asphalt and install new pavement markings. To complete all resurfacing, crews are permitted to temporarily two lanes of I-95 within the project limits, overnight, Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
To keep crews and motorists safe during resurfacing, there will be limited access to the College Park Weigh Station and the Park and Ride Lot nightly, Sunday through Saturday, between midnight and 5 a.m. Drivers should consider using MD 212 (exit 29, Powder Mill Road) as an alternate during the work. Motorists should plan ahead and make alternate overnight parking arrangements. Tractor trailer drivers are advised to use the Hyattstown, Frederick or Upper Marlboro Weigh Stations as overnight alternatives d during all phases of reconstruction.
Preliminary work on the project began in late April. To date, crews have completed inlet and storm drain construction. Crews continue to perform soil and slope stabilization and for better roadway drainage.
SHA’s contractor for the work is Francis O. Day Company of Rockville. More than 260,000 motorists approach this section of roadway each day.
