Motorists Should Expect Nighttime Single Lane Closures, Controlled by Flaggers

(May 9, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will resurface MD 36 between Jennings Run and Braddock Run in Allegany County beginning May 10.  Weather permitting the nearly two mile, $743,000 project will be complete by late June.

“This project will provide a smoother ride for thousands of motorists,” said SHA District 6 Engineer Anthony K. Crawford.  “We ask that drivers partner with SHA in work zone safety. There will be a flagging operation each night to assist with the single-lane closure.”

SHA’s contractor, Belt Paving, Inc. of Cumberland, will patch, grind (remove the top layer of pavement), resurface, restripe and add centerline rumble strips to the roadway.  Crews will close a single-lane overnight, controlled by flaggers, during construction for the safety of workers and drivers.  Additionally, crews will use barrels, digital message signs and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. 

Approximately 10,000 vehicles use this section of MD 36 each day. This area of MD 36 was last completely resurfaced in 1999.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
