Traffic Shift Needed for Upcoming Median Work

(April 15, 2016) – Beginning Sunday at 9 p.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will shift traffic to create a median work zone  on MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) between Forestville Road and MD 458 (Silver Hill Road).

Crews will remove existing pavement markings, replace pavement markings and install a concrete barrier to create the median work zone. All traffic lanes should reopen by 5 a.m. each morning. Work will continue each night through the end of May, weather permitting.  Crews can also close a single lane on MD 4 weekdays between 9 a.m. and three p.m.

Once all of the barrier is in place, crews will begin construction of a median that should be complete by late fall. Lane widths in both directions of MD 4 will be permanently reduced from 12 to 11 feet.  The work includes storm water management construction and road widening through the elimination of wide shoulders within the work zone.  The $24 million MD 4 pedestrian safety improvement project, which should be complete by fall 2017.

Construction season is in full gear.  A complete listing of current roadway projects is included in E-Road Ready, the online brochure.  For more information on Work Zone Safety Awareness, visit www.roads.maryland.gov and click on the work zone safety banner.  Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
