Nearly Six Miles Targeted in Snow Hill Area for Completion by Mid-January

(December 18, 2015) – It’s the middle of December – holiday celebrations are underway, Marylanders are gearing up for snow and paving crews are… well, they’re working like it’s the peak summer paving season.  Asphalt patching and paving continue around the State as the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) works to produce every possible mile of new road surface before asphalt plants eventually shut down for annual winter maintenance.

In Worcester County, crews have begun milling MD 12 (Snow Hill Road/North Washington Street) between US 113 Business (Market Street) and the Nassawango Creek Bridge, a total of nearly six miles.  This work includes part of downtown Snow Hill.  Weather permitting, SHA will begin paving this Saturday, December 19 and work six days a week (excluding Sunday) from 9 a.m. to dark.  With a short break around the holidays and continued good weather, paving should take about three weeks.  Motorists should expect a single lane closure and flagging operation during work hours.

“SHA recognizes this work will impact Snow Hill residents and we’re asking for their patience and cooperation,” said District Engineer Donnie Drewer.  “While there’s never a good time to pave a main road through town, taking advantage of these warm December temperatures means we won’t have to do this during the peak summer travel and boating season.”

This project is funded under a $5.4 million multi-location area wide contract awarded to Allan Myers of Dover, DE.  On average, about 5,000 vehicles travel this stretch of MD 12 each day.  For the latest real-time travel information, log onto www.md511.org.
