First of Two Total Weekend Closure Scheduled for Saturday, October 3
The one-mile long project includes patching, grinding (removing the top layer of pavement), resurfacing and restriping Layhill Road. Other work includes:
• Replacing two aging storm drain pipes under MD 182 near Park Vista Drive;
• Cleaning and repairing existing stormwater inlets and outfalls; and
• Upgrading existing traffic barrier where applicable.
SHA will institute a temporary, 12-hour Saturday closure and detour of MD 182 at MD 28 (Norbeck Road) and at MD 97 (Georgia Avenue). The closure is dependent on weather conditions. The first closure is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 3 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drivers must use MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and MD 28 as the primary detour route during the temporary closure. The second weekend closure is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, weather permitting.
SHA’s contractor, F.O. Day, Inc. of Rockville, will work Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and at night during paving operations between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. This section of MD 182 was last resurfaced in 1995 and has an average daily traffic volume of approximately 10,000 vehicles daily. Area residents should expect equipment noise while roadwork is underway.
While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to further help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes, and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely.
