(April 14, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has started a highway maintenance project to improve the ride for more than 9,000 motorists who travel on US 1 (Conowingo Road) between Poole Road and Smith Road each day in northeastern Harford County.  The improvements will be complete early summer, weather permitting.

Crews will mill, patch and resurface the pavement. Motorists should expect single lane closures along US 1 in the Darlington area between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and, if needed, between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Flagpersons will guide traffic through the highway work zone, which is marked with temporary signs, cones and barrels. Motorists should also use caution while entering and exiting intersections and driveways.  Gray & Son, Inc. of Timonium is completing the work under a $1 million contract..

In addition to this project, drivers may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones. Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it is a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down.  Everyone is at risk.  In four out of five work zone-related crashes, it is the driver or passenger who is injured or killed.

In 2014, nine people lost their lives in Maryland work zone crashes, including four highway workers. While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to keep traffic safely moving in work zones, please partner with us because work zone safety is everyone’s business – slow down and stay alert.  Safer driving.
