(March 11, 2015) – On Sunday evening, State Highway Administration (SHA) crews closed the MD 950 (Garden City Drive) ramp to westbound US 50 (John Hanson Highway) and detoured traffic due to a pipe collapse under the roadway caused by heavy rains.  SHA posted crews to monitor the washed out area and observed a hole expanding and conditions deteriorating. As a result of ongoing inspections, SHA today also will close the ramp from Garden City Drive to eastbound US 50 and detour traffic until permanent repairs can be made.  These detours will impact Metro riders using the New Carrollton Metro Station.

 

SHA is developing a repair plan to replace the pipe that carries Beaverdam Creek five feet below the roadway.  The pipe is 12 feet in diameter and 160 feet long.  Due to utilities above the pipe and the size of the culvert, SHA estimates it will take several months to replace the pipe and reconstruct the road.

All motorists accessing US 50 are advised to detour onto Corporate Drive and Pennsy Drive. 

At the intersection of Pennsy Drive and Ardwick Ardmore Road, motorists accessing US 50 eastbound should turn right and proceed onto the ramp to US 50 eastbound. At the same intersection, motorists accessing US 50 westbound should continue straight on Pennsy Drive, turn right onto MD 410 (Veterans Parkway) and then turn left onto the ramp to  US 50 westbound.  Travelers should allow extra travel time during the detour (please see map).
