(March 5, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) and Transportation Authority have crews deployed for a storm today that is expected to last through the evening.  As snow begins to fall in the metro area, SHA is urging commuters to consider the situation now as well as later for their return trip should they drive because conditions will continue to deteriorate throughout the day.

“Conditions will steadily worsen through the day and crews will need plenty of operating space to clear lanes and plow,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “The storm will likely last into the evening and temperatures will be falling through much of the day, creating icy spots.”

SHA crews will plow and salt as needed, but motorists must modify driving behavior for conditions. Drivers should slow down, use caution, allow extra distance between vehicles, use snow tires and allow plenty of time for travel.  Visit http://www.md511.org/ and www.traffic.md.gov or call 511 for traffic information.

SHA will deploy six heavy duty tow trucks across the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan region to assist disabled tractor trailers along the interstates.  To avoid problems on the road, truckers can safely ride out the storm at designated park and ride locations. SHA maintains the numbered roads in Maryland with the exception of those on Baltimore City or tolled roads (including the ICC, I-95 north of Baltimore City, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge etc.  Click here to obtain information for county roads departments.
