Detour Will Remain in Effect Until Further Notice          
          
(October 3, 2008) – In June 2008, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) closed the MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) Bridge in Knoxville, Frederick County. SHA began this project to replace the two-lane bridge structure built in 1910.           
          
During construction, crews discovered that the retaining wall (a wall structure which holds back rock and soil and prevents erosion) supporting MD 180 and several driveways, was beginning to deteriorate. While the appropriate course of action is being developed, SHA will continue the 4.5 mile detour which directs motorists to MD 17, US 340, and MD 67.          
          
SHA is working with elected officials to arrange a meeting later this month to update those residents directly affected by the project.          
          
The bridge was originally scheduled to open to traffic before schools reconvened this fall. Given the delays, SHA anticipates that the closure will extend for several months, possibly through next spring. Temporary traffic signs are in place to alert motorists of the closure and detour route. More than 1,200 vehicles travel along this section of MD 180 each day.
