(January 6, 2015) – As the afternoon rush hour begins, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) continues its winter storm operations statewide.  More snow than predicted blanketed the region this morning while highway crews plowed and salted State-maintained routes.  Crews were able to make progress mid-day, and are now preparing to address road conditions tonight. Pavement temperatures are expected to remain below the freezing mark.

“As we approach the evening commute, patient driving will be equally as important as driving to the conditions on the road,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “This morning’s efforts to clear the snow primarily were impacted by the volume of traffic. Crews can also be delayed by crashes resulting from vehicles driving too fast for conditions.  Please put your safety and the safety of others ahead of the need to get where you’re going quickly by following the rules of the road.”

Keeping the rules of the road in mind will help road crews to work and drivers to arrive safely at their destinations.  SHA crews will continue to plow and salt as needed; motorists should slow down, use caution, allow plenty of distance between vehicles, and plan for additional travel time.

Drivers should also be aware that icy tree limbs may break and fall onto roads and affect power lines. SHA reminds motorists that it is State law to use low-beam headlights when using windshield wipers.
