Motorists Should Expect Delays through Early November
(October 10, 2008) – Beginning Monday, October 13, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will grind and resurface approximately two miles along US 40 Alternate (National Highway) between MD 658 (Campground Road) and Long Drive in LaVale, Allegany County. SHA will complete the resurfacing project in early November, weather permitting. The resurfacing project is part of the $7 million LaVale Streetscape Project SHA began in spring 2007.
Motorists should expect lane shifts along US 40 Alternate, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Variable message signs, barrels, and flagpersons will guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays during construction and use extra caution through the work zone.
The overall LaVale streetscape project includes widening National Highway to provide a dedicated center left turn lane for both directions and bicycle compatible shoulders. The project also includes new ADA compatible sidewalks along each direction of US 40 Alternate between MD 658 and Long Drive. SHA will reconstruct traffic signals (with accessible pedestrian and countdown signals) along US 40 Alternate at Campground Road and Long Drive. Beginning spring 2009, SHA will begin landscape plantings and installation of ornamental pedestrian lighting along US 40 Alternate in LaVale.
SHA upgraded the existing drainage system by installing new curb and gutter, pipes, inlets and a new pipe culvert at Harold Street and Oaklawn Avenue. SHA constructed a storm water management pond at Holly Field, which will help manage storm water runoff and improve water quality. The entire project should be complete in spring 2009, weather permitting.
Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along US 40 Alternate, MD 658 or other State numbered routes in Allegany County may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.
Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.
