(July 27, 2012) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is moving forward with its $13 million major construction project to replace the I-695 North (Baltimore Beltway inner loop) Bridge over Wilkens Avenue (MD 372) in southwestern Baltimore County.
During the week of July 29, construction crews will set steel girders for the new bridge, requiring temporary lane closures and late-night total road closures on the section of Wilkens Avenue underneath I-695. All lanes on northbound and southbound I-695 will remain open while crews set the girders over Wilkens Avenue. Maryland State Police will patrol the interchange work zone area each night.
Nightly Lane Closure and Detour Schedule - Sunday, July 29 through Thursday, August 2:
- 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.: Single lane closures along Wilkens Avenue East and West.
- 11 p.m. – 4 a.m.: Wilkens Avenue East temporarily closed to all traffic. Detour: I-695 South to Exit 12A, US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) interchange, right onto Leeds Avenue, left onto I-695 North and back to Wilkens Avenue East.
- 11 p.m. – 4 a.m.: Wilkens Avenue West temporarily closed to all traffic. Detour: I-695 North to Exit 13, through the MD 144 (Frederick Road) interchange to I-695 South and back to Wilkens Avenue West.
- 4 a.m. – 5 a.m.: Single lane closures along Wilkens Avenue East and West.
- In case of inclement weather, the steel beam work, overnight lane closures, late-night road closures and detours will take place the week of August 5.

Maryland SafeZones automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras are deployed along I-695 in the vicinity of the Wilkens Avenue interchange. Maryland SafeZones will issue citations to drivers exceeding the speed limit by 12 MPH or more in work zones along controlled access roadways with speed limits of 45 MPH or higher. The fine for a speeding violation issued through the Maryland SafeZones program is $40.
While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
