MD 97 sign
(January 6, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is activating a new traffic and pedestrian signal at the intersection of May Street and Rippling Brook Drive with MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) in in Montgomery County.
The new traffic signal is under a mandatory three-day flash mode to familiarize drivers with the signal system starting today. It will go into full-color operation on Thursday, January 9.
“This new signal will slow down traffic on this busy corridor and provide a controlled, safe pedestrian crossing,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Greg Slater. “We are working diligently to install features to improve safety in our urban areas such as lower speed limits, additional signage, improved markings and bike lanes.”
To accompany the new traffic and pedestrian signals, MDOT SHA has installed crosswalks across MD 97, May Street and Rippling Brook Drive. Approximately 33,000 vehicles per day use this section of Georgia Avenue.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for motorists, as well as our crews. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
