Additional Lanes, Signal Upgrades Provide Congestion Relief Near Hagerstown
(August 6, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed a $4.5 million project to improve safety and intersection capacity at the I-81 (Maryland Veterans Memorial Highway) Exit 9 ramps at Maugans Avenue near Hagerstown, Washington County.
Construction on the project began fall 2023 and included:
- an additional lane on ramps from Maugans Avenue to southbound I-81, from southbound I-81 to Maugans Avenue and from northbound I-81 to Maugans Avenue;
- reconstructing traffic signals at the northbound and southbound I-81 exit ramps;
- improving lighting and signage;
- shoulder patching on Maugans Avenue at the I-81 interchange;
- reconstructing the median along Maugans Avenue at the I-81 interchange;
- improving storm drainage and
- constructing erosion and sediment facilities.
Completion of the project provides congestion relief in the area and enhances safety and mobility for commuters traveling to and from I-81. Contractor F.O. Day, of Rockville, performed the work. Learn more about the project here.
