Delays Expected on Several Roadways Through Sunday, May 21
(May 16, 2023) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is alerting motorists to a multi-day convoy of large equipment that will travel from Baltimore into Virginia between Wednesday night, May 17, and Sunday, May 21, weather permitting.
Capital City Group, of Columbus, Ohio, will transport power generating plant components from the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore’s Dundalk Marine Terminal to a final destination of Potomac Energy Center in Leesburg, Va.
The company’s convoy will involve 200-foot and 240-foot tractor trailers, each escorted by two Maryland State Police vehicles and two private escorts. One tractor trailer will begin its journey 8 p.m. Wednesday and the other will start at 9 p.m. Wednesday. The convoy is expected to leave Maryland and enter Virginia by Sunday.
On Wednesday night, the convoy will leave the Dundalk Marine Terminal on Broening Highway. The route will include the following roads:
- Baltimore City – Broening Highway, Dundalk Avenue, Holabird Avenue, Poncabird Pass and Ponca Street.
- Baltimore County – I-695 (Baltimore Beltway), MD 129 (Park Heights Avenue) and MD 140 (Reisterstown Road).
- Carroll County – MD 97 (Old Washington Road), MD 26 (Liberty Road) and MD 27 (Ridge Road), including a small section of MD 27 in Howard County.
- Montgomery County – MD 124 (Woodfield Road), MD 108 (Olney Laytonsville Road), MD 27 (Ridge Road), Father Hurley Boulevard, Crystal Rock Drive, MD 118 (Germantown Road), I-270 and I-495 (Capital Beltway) to the Virginia state line.
Because of the size of the vehicles, the convoy will travel much slower than the posted speed limit. The State Highway Administration realizes the procession may be an inconvenience to other motorists, and will make every effort to safely expedite the transport.
