Additional Exit Lane to Open on Northbound MD 85 to Northbound I-270
(September 22, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is nearing completion of the $93 million I-270/MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) interchange project in Frederick County. Beginning 9 p.m. Monday, September 26, crews will start shifting travel lanes into its final traffic configuration on MD 85.
The final traffic configuration includes:
- A new, second exit lane on both northbound and southbound MD 85 to northbound I-270, with traffic signals to safely maintain traffic flow.
- One additional travel lane on northbound and southbound MD 85 between Spectrum Drive and south of Crestwood Boulevard.
- New concrete median and curbs on MD 85.
The traffic shift will require single-lane closures on MD 85 overnight in both directions for two nights, Monday, September 26, and Tuesday, September 27. Work hours are 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting.
The work is part of an interchange project that replaced two bridges on I-270 with a new structure featuring longer exit lanes and wider shoulders, and installed a partial diverging diamond interchange on MD 85 to improve traffic flow and access to and from I-270. The project is expected to be complete this fall. Learn more about the project by clicking here. Watch the video showing the completed project here.
Beginning October 1, 2022, the Move Over Law in Maryland will require motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
