MDOT SHA Asset Management Program
Introduction
As transportation asset management is emerging as a necessity for transportation agencies to meet federal requirements and maintain a state of good repair of the transportation systems, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) strives to be an industry leader in delivering an innovative asset management program. MDOT SHA is committed to connecting our customers to life’s opportunities by providing safe, reliable, and sustainable transportation systems.
The MDOT SHA Asset Management Program directs progress to 14 key asset classes.
MDOT SHA uses asset lifecycle management strategies to foster collaboration among planning, engineering, operations, maintenance, and finance for the comprehensive management of the asset portfolio. This approach allows the agency to:
- Optimize performance outcomes and public benefits by focusing available funding on programs and projects that offer the biggest impact and highest return on investment.
- Invest in the right treatment, at the right time, for each asset.
- Build an integrated asset management culture to share and adopt best practices across MDOT that incorporate social, environmental, and economic costs – known as the triple bottom line perspective – into every business decision.
- Support continual process improvements to foster innovation to achieve long-term objectives.
