Maryland’s first diverging diamond interchange (DDI) opened to traffic at MD 295 and Arundel Mills Boulevard in Anne Arundel County in June 2012. The DDI provides a crucial link to the Maryland Live! Casino and Arundel Mills Mall and alleviates congestion on area roads.
Use extra caution while driving the diverging diamond interchange. It is different from most other interchanges, with traffic driving on the left side of the road and then crossing at a signal.
The diverging diamond interchange near Arundel Mills Mall was funded by the developer of the nearby casino. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has added more diverging diamond interchanges since 2012.
The partial diverging diamond interchange at right, constructed at MD 85 Buckeystown and I-270 near Frederick, opened in 2022.
