(April 15, 2011) – To stabilize a sinkhole adjacent to MD 550 (Woodsboro Road), the State Highway Administration (SHA) has temporarily closed a section of Woodsboro Road between Steiner Smith Road and MD 194 (Woodsboro Pike) just north of Woodsboro, Frederick County.   More than 3,700 vehicles per day use this section of MD 550.

Motorists on northbound MD 550 are being detoured to northbound MD 194 to north on Legore Bridge Road to south on Steiner Smith Road back to MD 550.

Motorists on southbound MD 550 will be detoured to north on Steiner Smith Road to south on Legore Bridge Road to south on MD 194 back to MD 550.

The closure is likely to extend through Sunday with heavy rains predicted throughout the day on Saturday.

“SHA crews made repairs to the pavement earlier this week after a small depression formed on Woodsboro Road,” said SHA District Engineer Dave Coyne.  “A school bus driver noticed the road depression this morning around 6:30 and called SHA and we responded immediately.  Additional investigation revealed a potential sinkhole and SHA acted quickly to close one lane of MD 550.  All lanes are now closed and the detour is in place.”
