​Corridor Identified for Improvements in Statewide Pedestrian Safety Action Plan 

(December 1, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) will host a second public informational workshop, 5-7 p.m. Monday, December 8, to present proposed concepts and gather more community input on ideas to improve pedestrian access and safety along MD 528 (Coastal Highway) in Worcester County. The workshop will be held at Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 4001 Coastal Highway, Ocean City.

SHA has identified the MD 528 corridor between 15th Street and 67th Street for safety improvements as part of its Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, which focuses on areas of need statewide and prioritizes corridors for pedestrian and bicycle safety projects.

At the last informational workshop in January 2025, the SHA project team solicited feedback through conversation and comment cards from residents and stakeholders. Members of the public also could offer comments online via MD 528 Pedestrian Safety Action Plan Project Portal page. The team considered this input to create concepts that include upgrades to support safe pedestrian and bicyclist movements, speed limit reductions and corridor-wide safety improvements.

At the follow-up workshop, project team members will be available to discuss details of the concept proposals. There will be no formal presentation. Attendees may arrive at any time during the workshop to view displays, ask questions and provide feedback. Materials also will be posted on the Project Portal.

This project is consistent with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Serious About Safety initiative, a department–wide commitment to advance improvements that drive safety goals and save lives. Working with community residents, officials and other stakeholders, SHA is developing strategies to enhance safety for all roadway users by increasing safety and mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Pedestrian Safety Action Plan is a key component of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Complete Streets Policy, which prioritizes safe, reliable, equitable and sustainable travel across all modes to make roads safer and connect Marylanders to jobs, education and economic opportunity. Projects under the Pedestrian Safety Action Plan also support Maryland’s Vision Zero ​goal to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries on state roadways by 2030.
