Plan for Extra Travel Time in Woodlawn Overnight 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.
(September 3, 2025) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close and detour an interchange ramp at the I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) / I-70 interchange for routine bridge inspections on four nights beginning Tuesday night, September 9. All overnight bridge inspection work is weather permitting. The work is expected to be complete later this month.
The State Highway Administration and its contractor, Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, have scheduled overnight bridge inspection and ramp detours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day for the following nights:
- Tuesday, September 9: Ramp from Northbound I-695 (Beltway Inner Loop) to Westbound I-70. Detour: Northbound I-695 to Eastbound I-70 Local to U-turn at Park and Ride lot to Westbound I-70.
- Wednesday, September 10: Southbound I-695 (Beltway Outer Loop) to eastbound I-70 Local and Park and Ride Lot. Detour: Southbound I-695 past I-70 to eastbound US 40, U-turn at Kent Avenue to westbound US 40, to northbound I-695 (Inner Loop) to eastbound I-70 (Local).
- Tuesday, September 23: Eastbound I-70 to northbound I-695 (Inner Loop). Detour: Eastbound I-70 past I-695 to U-turn at Park and Ride lot to westbound I-70 to northbound I-695.
- Wednesday, September 24: Westbound I-70 (Local) to southbound I-695 (Inner Loop). Detour: Northbound I-695 past MD 122 (Security Boulevard) to westbound MD 26 (Liberty Road) to southbound I-695.
Crews will place temporary, portable digital message boards within the interchange area to alert motorists to inspection dates and detours, and will use portable digital message boards, traffic signs, and reflective barrels to direct motorists through the interchange work zone and ramp detour routes.
The State Highway Administration advises all travelers to plan for extra travel time within the I-695/ I-70 interchange area and to look ahead for other travelers following temporary detour routes.
In case of inclement weather, the inspection work and ramp closures will take place on the next possible weeknight (Sundays – Thursdays).
The bridge inspection work has been coordinated with ongoing construction work for the State Highway Administration’s $186 million
I-695 Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) project to reduce congestion along the west and north sides of the Baltimore Beltway, from the I-70 Triple Bridges interchange to east of MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard).
