Drivers Should Expect Overnight Ramp Closures and Detours
(April 24, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin asphalt patching operations on interchange ramps along eastbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Inner Loop) in the Towson area of Baltimore County starting Sunday night, May 4. The project is expected to be completed by mid-May, weather permitting.
Contractor crews will conduct the work on interchange ramps between I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway/BHX) and MD 41 (Perring Parkway) as part of a $12.8 million State Highway Administration contract for paving Interstate and primary highways in Baltimore and Harford counties. The work will require overnight ramp closures and detours, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays.
The State Highway Administration advises all through travelers to plan for extra travel time on eastbound I-695 in the Towson area and to look ahead for other travelers following temporary ramp detour routes.
Motorists can expect overnight closures and detours to occur in the following sequence (subject to change due to weather and other construction factors):
Sunday, May 4 through Thursday, May 8 (ramps to be closed on successive nights):
- Southbound I-83 (BHX) ramp to Eastbound I-695 (Inner Loop)
- Detour: Proceed on southbound I-83 ramp, stay right for the ramp to MD 139 (Charles Street). Then proceed straight to the traffic signal at Charles Street. At the traffic signal, proceed straight across Charles Street to the ramp to I-695 Eastbound.
- Eastbound I-695 to Exit 26A, Southbound MD 45 (York Road)
- Detour: Proceed on eastbound I-695 past MD 45 to MD 146 (Dulaney Valley Road) to Exit 27B, northbound MD 146 (Dulaney Valley Road). On northbound MD 146, merge left and then turn left at the next traffic signal onto the ramp to westbound I-695 (Outer Loop) and proceed on westbound I-695 back to the MD 45 interchange.
- Eastbound I-695 to Exit 26B, Northbound MD 45 (York Road)
- Detour: Proceed on eastbound I-695 past MD 45 to MD 146 (Dulaney Valley Road) to Exit 27B, northbound MD 146 (Dulaney Valley Road). On northbound MD 146 immediately merge left and then turn left at the next traffic signal onto the ramp to westbound I-695 (Outer Loop) and proceed on westbound I-695 back to the MD 45 interchange.
- Eastbound I-695 to Exit 27A, Southbound MD 146 (Dulaney Valley Road)
- Detour: Proceed on eastbound I-695 to Exit 28, Providence Road. At the end of the ramp bear right to northbound Providence Road, then turn left from Providence Road onto the ramp to westbound I-695 (Outer Loop). Continue on westbound I-695 back to the MD 146 interchange.
The schedule for patching pavement on other interchange ramps between I-83 (BHX) and MD 41 will be released at a later date.
The State Highway Administration and its contractor C.J. Miller will use temporary signs and barrels to direct motorists through the interchange work zones and ramp detour routes.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
