Drivers Should Expect Daytime Lane Closures During the Upgrades
(November 21, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin work to upgrade highway signs for commercial vehicles on eastbound I-68 in Allegany and Garrett counties. The $2.6 million project, which will improve safety for commercial drivers, should be completed in spring 2026, weather permitting.
The upgrades will include an Intelligent Transportation System overhead sign that has a radar detection system for commercial vehicles. A beacon will flash indicating the vehicle is over the posted speed limit. The remaining signs will be introducing a right lane only restriction for commercial trucks.
This work allows the State Highway Administration to use the latest technology to alert drivers to the steep mountain grades between Garrett and Allegany counties into Cumberland. The right lane only restriction for tractor trailers and improved signage that will provide advance warnings to commercial drivers is an effort to reduce traffic incidents.
The State Highway Administration’s contractor, McLean Contracting Company, of Glen Bernie, will be performing the work. They will use barrels, cones and signage to make motorists aware of any impacts for drivers that may occur.
Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
