Maryland SafeZones Speed Enforcement Promotes Awareness, Work Zone Safety
(September 12, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning work this week on a 3.3-mile safety and resurfacing project along MD 100 in Anne Arundel County from MD 170 (Aviation Boulevard) to MD 3 Business (Crain Highway), including the I-97 and MD 174 interchange ramps. Completion is expected in summer 2025, weather permitting.
The $10.8 million project work includes installing guardrails and new signage, updating pavement markings and raised pavement markers and repairing drainage systems within the project limits.
Motorists should anticipate overnight single- or double-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays; weekday single-lane or shoulder closures are also permitted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. if needed. Work along the interchange ramps will also require temporary overnight detours. Portable variable message signs, temporary traffic signs and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone.
Contractor Allan Myers MD Inc., of Fallston, is performing the work. Customers with questions may call the district 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.
As part of the ongoing effort to promote work zone safety, the Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system will be deployed along the project site. The speed limit throughout the work zone will remain 55 mph. The registered owner of vehicles exceeding the posted speed in work zones may be issued a $80 civil penalty. The SafeZones Program aims to change driver behavior and increase awareness of the impact of speed-related crashes in work zones. For details, visit safezones.maryland.gov.
The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during this necessary work to maintain and improve the transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
