Motorists Can Expect Overnight Lane Closures

(September 1, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a paving project next week on I-68 (National Freeway) between the MD 144 (Western Pike) interchange (near Woodmont Road) and MD 903 (Mountain Road) interchange (near Mountain Road) near Sideling Hill in Washington County.

The project is scheduled to start Tuesday, September 6. Work will be performed overnights, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. Motorists should expect single lane closures each evening as crews mill (remove the top layer of asphalt), pave and restripe almost four miles of I-68, beginning from the westernmost part of the project limits. Work is expected to be complete by summer 2023, weather permitting.

Approximately 15,200 vehicles travel on this section of I-68 each day. MDOT SHA contractor C. William Hetzer, of Hagerstown, will use portable signage, barrels and cones to safely guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should plan extra commuting time during construction.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.

Editor’s Note

From intersection improvements to widening and new interchange construction, MDOT SHA is investing in projects to enhance the commute and daily travel for millions of Marylanders.  MDOT SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and 17,000 miles of non-toll state roads – the interstate, US and state numbered routes in Maryland’s 23 counties.
