Project Supports Safe, Reliable and Efficient Transportation Near Hagerstown

(August 22, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a $26.8 million project this week to replace the eastbound and westbound I-70 bridges over Crystal Falls Drive near South Mountain State Park in the Boonsboro area of Washington County. The project is expected to be complete by summer 2025.

“Replacement of the I-70 bridges over Crystal Falls Drive is a perfect example of Team MDOT’s dedicated work to modernize and improve Maryland’s entire transportation network,” said MDOT Secretary James F. Ports, Jr. “South Mountain State Park is a tremendous asset for our state, and we want residents, commuters and tourists to have safe and reliable access when they come through this beautiful area.”

Originally constructed in 1966, the I-70 bridges are safe for the traveling public but are nearing the end of their service life. This project will include:

  • Replacement of the existing three-span concrete bridges with single steel girder bridges.
  • Improvement of stormwater management facilities.
  • Installation of traffic barriers and signage.
  • Paving, resurfacing and permanent pavement striping on 0.85 mile of the I-70 approach roadways.

“It’s essential that we preserve our infrastructure, especially our bridges, to keep motorists traveling safely through Maryland,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “This project will address these aging bridges while maintaining traffic flow, which averages about 70,000 vehicles every day.”

Temporary roadways and bridges will be installed in the median of I-70, adjacent to the existing bridges, to maintain traffic flow. MDOT SHA contractor Triton Construction Inc. of St. Albans, W.Va., is performing the work. More information on the project can be found here.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
