​Project will Improve Traffic Operations at MD 103 at US 29; Includes New sidewalks for Pedestrians and Bike Lanes for Cyclists 

(August 2, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will widen MD 103 (Montgomery Road) between U.S. 29 (Old Columbia Pike) and Long Gate Parkway in Ellicott City, Howard County. Work will begin this week and the project is expected to be complete in summer 2023.

This $10.8 million roadway-widening project will improve safety and capacity on MD 103 near Long Gate Shopping Center. As part of the project, crews will construct a third travel lane on MD 103 for motorists wishing to access northbound U.S. 29. The new dedicated northbound U.S. 29 lane will separate exiting traffic from westbound MD 103 prior to the traffic signal at Old Columbia Pike. Sidewalks and bicycle lanes also will be added. 

The project includes a painted median on MD 103 to improve visibility and safety for motorists crossing the busy roadway or making left turns from side streets. Additional improvements include replacement of curb, gutter and drainage pipes, reconstruction of traffic signals and landscaping and stormwater management.

There will be single-lane and shoulder closures on MD 103 Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One travel lane will be closed during work hours to limit traffic disruptions during construction.
