​(August 13, 2019) – On Monday, Aug. 12, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) completed emergency repairs to eastbound US 40 Alternate (Old National Pike) between Fern Lane and Ridge Road in Middletown. The right “truck climbing” lane and shoulder are both open to traffic.

The right lane and shoulder have been closed since a spring 2018 storm washed away a section of the highway slope. The emergency repair, which consisted of extensive slope repair using techniques such as soil nails and rock bolting, stabilized a significant section of US 40 Alternate on Braddock Mountain.

MDOT SHA contractor Brawner Builders, Inc. of Hunt Valley completed the $2.3 million repair. Approximately 20,000 motorists use this section of US 40 Alternate each day.

In southwestern Frederick County, MDOT SHA will close and detour both lanes of MD 28 (Dickerson Road) at the bridge over the Monocacy River in Dickerson next weekend. The total closure and detour are necessary as part of the bridge rehabilitation project. The closure will begin at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, and continue until 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26.

MDOT SHA will detour travelers using MD 109 (Old Hundred Road), MD 355 (Urbana Pike), MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) and MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike). Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time if traveling during the closure.

After the total closure ends on Monday, Aug. 26, MDOT SHA will resume the single lane closure that has been in place since June. The single lane closure is necessary for MDOT SHA’s contractor, Corman Kokosing Construction Company of Annapolis Junction, to complete the bridge replacement work. The project is expected to be complete spring 2020. Approximately 9,300 vehicles use this section of MD 28 each day. ​
