MDOT SHA Replaces Traffic Signal at 2nd Street and Liberty/Green Streets Intersection; Motorists Should Expect Single Lane Closures During the Traffic Signal Work

(August 9, 2019) – Beginning next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project to install a new traffic signal on 2nd Street at the Liberty Street/Green Street intersection in the Town of Oakland. The project will be complete by the end of the year.

The new signal, which replaces an existing traffic signal that is nearly 50 years old, will feature LED traffic signal heads for enhanced driver visibility at night and during inclement weather. During construction, crews will remove the existing traffic signal and install a four-way stop condition with stop-signs temporarily. Temporary pavement markings also will help guide drivers through the intersection until the new traffic signal is complete.

Motorists can expect daily single lane closures on 2nd Street guided by a flagging operation. Additionally, one left lane on Green Street will be closed during construction. Approximately 2,200 vehicles per day use this section of 2nd Street each day, so daily commuters should allow extra drive time.

MDOT SHA urges drivers need to stay alert in work zones. Please focus on the road and look for highway workers, equipment, reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and changing traffic patterns. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
