Project to Improve Intersection Operations and Safety Will Begin in April
 
(March 22, 2019) – In April, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project to install a full-color traffic signal at the US 1 (Conowingo Road) intersection with MD 222 (Susquehanna River Road) near the Conowingo Dam in Cecil County. The new signal will offer drivers a protected left turn movement from MD 222 to southbound US 1, improving overall intersection operations and safety.

 

Construction will begin in April and be complete by June. Motorists should be alert for single lane closures, flagging and overhead utility work.

 

The new full-color signal will replace a flashing yellow warning beacon at the intersection. To further enhance safety, MDOT SHA will install advance signal indicators and “dilemma zone detection” on US 1. The dilemma zone detection system helps minimize potential intersection conflicts by altering traffic signal phase changes based on the location and speed of vehicles relative to the intersection. On average, nearly 14,000 vehicles travel this part of US 1 and 3,000 vehicles use MD 222 each day. MDOT SHA is constructing this signal under a $4.1 million multi-location areawide contract awarded to Rommel Engineering and Construction of Linthicum. The contract covers signal work in all nine eastern shore counties.
