Roadway Widening among other Major Improvements on MD 198
(September 7, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning an intersection improvement project on
westbound MD 198 (Sandy Spring Road) at Riding Stable Road in Burtonsville, Montgomery County, near the Prince George’s County line. The $1 million project will be complete by the end of the year.
The project includes widening and lengthening deceleration lanes on westbound MD 198 to accommodate additional vehicles, which will help reduce congestion and improve overall intersection operations.
Other work on the project includes:
• Installing intersection lighting;
• Paving and restriping MD 198;
• Installing guardrail; and
• Improving highway drainage systems.
Motorists can expect single lane closures on MD 198 Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., as well as Sunday nights until Friday mornings between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Additional lane closures, including on weekends, may be necessary to keep the project on schedule.
MDOT SHA’s contractor, Francis O. Day Company of Rockville, will use barrels, cones and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. More than 41,000 vehicles travel this section of MD 198 each day so motorists are encouraged to build extra drive time through the work zone during active construction.

Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely.
